ROPARD’s 2008 Children’s Vision Award Dinner
Saturday May 31, 2008
The new Detroit Institute of Arts
The
Children’s Vision Award was established in 2000 to honor people who have
made a significant contribution to improving children’s vision through
pediatric retinal research and education.
This year, ROPARD will honor Dr. Mark Humayun, Professor of
Ophthalmology at the Keck School of Medicine and Associate Director of
Research at the Doheny Eye Institute at the University of Southern
California, for his work on retinal implants and in recognition of his
lifelong desire to help the blind to see.
Our
keynote speaker for this event will be Ray Kurzweil. Mr. Kurzweil is an
inventor, entrepreneur, visionary, futurist, philosopher, and author.
His latest book, The Singularity is Near will be available for purchase
at our event.
Mr. Kurzweil has been involved in providing assistive devices for the
blind for many years. His Kurzweil Reading Machine developed over three
decades ago, has recently been replaced with the Kurzweil-NFB Reader,
the world’s first handheld optical character recognition reading
system.
Today
Ray Kurzweil continues to expand his explorations into the limitations
of biology on technological advancement and how this will affect the
future of the human species. Mr. Kurzweil will appear as an interactive
hologram at the Children’s Vision Award.
